Downsizing a long-time home is emotional work as much as logistical, so start months ahead and go one room at a time rather than facing the whole house at once. Begin with low-emotion, high-volume spaces — the garage, linen closets, duplicate kitchenware — where quick wins build momentum. Sort into keep, gift, donate, sell, and discard, and measure the new home’s rooms so decisions about which furniture comes are grounded in what will actually fit.

Set aside a single, clearly labeled box for irreplaceable documents — IDs, Social Security and Medicare cards, insurance policies, wills and powers of attorney, and financial records — and keep it with you rather than on the truck. Photograph heirlooms before they’re packed, and if items are being distributed among family, decide and label those before move day to avoid confusion. A short written inventory of high-value pieces helps with both insurance and peace of mind.

Plan the new layout around safe movement: clear pathways at least walker-width, no loose rugs or cords across walking lines, frequently used items at waist height to avoid bending and reaching, and good lighting on stairs and hallways. Arranging grab bars and a comfortable, reachable bed and seating before the first night makes the transition far smoother than sorting it out afterward.

On the day itself, less is more. Arrange for the person moving to spend the busiest hours somewhere calm — a family member’s home or a favorite outing — while the crew works. Prepare a comfort kit with medications, water, snacks, a change of clothes, and a familiar item or two. A slower, well-staffed pace beats a rushed one; the goal is a safe, dignified move, not a fast one.
